Update from Asofamilia

May 30, 2010:  Here is an update posted on the Asofamila blog.  An important message here is that the sponsored families have been contacted, most are okay.  If you sponsored family needs help, you will be contacted.

Dear friends and families,

Please pray for our country, because natural disasters are causing serious problems to all the Guatemalans. As I have always told you, we live in a country where many unexpected things can happen, and what is happening right now is only a few of the things that we all have to go through.

On Thursday evening, the eruption of the “Pacaya” volcanoe spreaded several inches of ash all over the areas of Escuintla, Palin, Amatitlan, Villa Nueva, Guatemala City and even several areas of Alta Verapaz. And in some areas, it
was not just ash, but also rocks falling and breaking car windows, roofs and houses made of corrugated metal layers, and others.

The situation got worse yesterday, due to the tropical storm “Agatha”, which started hitting our country. It has been raining non-stop since yesterday and it will continue to rain during several more days. Rivers are growing very fast, some of them are now twice as deep as normal. Bridges are collapsing, trees are falling, there have been several power
break-downs, streets blocked by water, thousands of people who live near rivers and hills, are being evacuated from those areas, and many more bad things are happening.

Javier has been calling the birth mothers to find out how they are doing and most of them are not going through too many problems, but a couple of them are facing a serious situation. I will send emails to the families that are
sponsoring those birth mothers.

The ones of you who can read Spanish will be able to get more information by visiting the website www.prensalibre.com.

And please, keep praying for all of us.  God bless you!
Marisol
