Advocates for World Health (AWH) is run by a group of college students, backed by a professional board of directors and advisors, that seeks to understand the complexities of Latin American societies and confront them in such a way as to not hinder them. Part of AWH’s mission is to recognize and preserve the beauty of the people and culture of developing world by providing the tools (medical equipment, supplies, physicians, and hospitals) to help them to take control of their futures.
Their first step is providing medical equipment and supplies. Through networking with health care providers in the United States, they are more capable of acquiring and providing medical supplies to developing clinics and hospitals.
- Their second step is launching a physician education program, which will help to provide the much needed knowledge to utilize the new equipment and supplies for the medical procedures.
- And finally, the third and final step is to install hospitals and clinics. When the first two steps are complete, they will have the foundation for starting their own hospitals to address the issues which they see fit.
By providing medical equipment and supplies to those who can otherwise not afford them, they are significantly helping these underprivileged regions focus on developing better healthcare.
In the past, AWH has shipped medical supplies to Haiti and Saint John Baptist Regional Hospital in Guatemala. Currently, AWH’s operations are primarily focused in Guatemala where it is participating in the rural development program put on by Aprofam which caters to the marginally poor, and the indigenous Mayan populace.
The program provides primary care and is part of a greater public health initiative aimed at improving the overall quality of the nation’s health care system. To read more about AWH, please visit their website, or this article, recently published by TampaBay.com.
